A king and queen don't live in a house. They live in a palace.
And on the new series The Royals, which is centered on a fictional, modern-day British monarchy led by Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley) and King Simon (Vincent Regan), the royals live in a lavish palace along with their two children, Prince Liam (William Moseley) and Princess Eleanor (Alexandra Park). Surrounded by acres of land and dozens of servants to tend to their every need, this is certainly one family that knows how to live in style.
But what about the real-life royals? As it turns out, they're living extremely well too. Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence for royalty since 1837, which means that Queen Elizabeth, Prince William and all the other members of the British royal family spend lots of time there. But what's it like behind those palace gates?

The Blue Drawing Room
When you're living extra fancy, of course you have your own drawing room. But is it for drawing?
A long time ago, the Blue Drawing Room used to be known as the South Drawing Room. It was originally intended as a ballroom, until the royals built another ballroom in the palace.
The more the merrier, after all.
The Blue Drawing Room
While it was originally painted red, these days the wallpaper is blue (hence the name) and was chosen by Queen Mary in the early twentieth century.
The design of the room is impressive, from the Corinthian columns to the crimson velvet curtains and dramatic portraits on the walls. It's like an uber-fancy version of something you'd see on Cribs. Or it would serve as the perfect backdrop for a scene in Cruel Intentions...
The Blue Drawing Room
Nowadays this room serves as a gathering spot for guests who meet here before large luncheons, parties and other grand occasions.
So basically it's a cool hangout spot where you can have a drink and mingle before the main event. We're so down...
The Grand Staircase
Part of being royalty is making a grand entrance, and what better way to do that than with a grand staircase?
In movies like Clueless and The Princess Diaries, the main character always makes his/her grand debut at the top of an elaborate staircase. It just wouldn't be the same if they simply walked through a set of doors. Staircases mean extra drama as all eyes in the room look up at you before you slowly make your way down...
At Buckingham Palace, the Grand Staircase is used by all visitors and is surrounded by a series of portraits of the royal family from Queen Victoria's era. They were specifically placed along the stairs so that the royal family's "images" would be there to welcome all those climbing the stairs.
Ballroom
One of the perks of being royalty is that you don't just throw a party. You throw a ball. In other words, a super fancy party. But in order to throw a ball, you've got to have a ballroom.
If you're one of the lucky few who receives an invite to the annual Diplomatic Reception, then you're quite familiar with the Ballroom. In addition to hosting fancy dinners for various Ambassadors and prominent people, the Ballroom (which is the largest room in the palace) used to serve as a concert hall.
In addition, the Queen will even knight people in this very room when they receive a British honour. Can you imagine the bragging rights?
After seeing Buckingham Palace, we just want to turn up Lorde's "Royals" and pretend that we're royalty. But while we wait for our own Prince Charming to come and whisk us off to our very own palace, we did get an idea.
Remember when Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West had a party at the French Palace of Versailles? We think we've found the couple's next party destination. If the royals will have them, of course...
