If you've been watching the recent previews for the upcoming series The Royals, which focuses on a fictional modern-day British royal family, you've learned that Queen Helena (played by Elizabeth Hurley) is one tough cookie. Or in the efforts of sounding more British, one tough crumpet!

What would you do if you were to meet a royal? They're not just any regular person off the street. They are well rehearsed when it comes to etiquette due to the fact that they are constantly in the public eye. You certainly wouldn't offer Queen Elizabeth a high-five, would you?

Here are 8 things you absolutely never do when meeting British royalty. You never know when you might run into one of them, so best to be prepared...

Don't Touch Them.

In other words, don't just reach out and grab them by the shoulder or put your hands all over them.

As part of the "no touch" rule, those meeting with Queen Elizabeth must wait for her to extend her hand first. And keep the contact to a minimum; hugs, kisses, and other more intimate forms of endearment are not considered approprriate.

Don't Be Caught Sitting.

When the Queen enters a room, for instance, you must stand to greet her and do not sit down until she does.

Don't Forget a Gift.

Gift-giving is a must when it comes to royalty. Just make sure that you give them something appropriate for the occasion.

Don't Show Up in Your PJs.

In other words, dress accordingly. If the event is black tie, make sure that you follow those standards.

Keep the casual clothing to a minimum: No flip-flops, torn jeans, you get the picture!

Tumblr

Don't Call Them Any Nicknames.

Just because you feel like you've known Prince Harry forever doesn't mean that you're suddenly on a first name basis. Save the "Will" reference and address royalty by their proper title.

Learn the proper titles for all members of royalty. For example, when you first meet the Queen she should be addressed as "Your Majesty" and "Ma'am" consequently after. When she leaves, however, you must address her as "Your Majesty" once again.

Don't Eat.

If you're at a table with the Queen, for instance, do not start eating until she does. And when she stops, you should stop to.

Tumblr

Don't Forget to Bow (or Curtsy).

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is required to bow when meeting royalty. If you're a US citizen, you can simply shake hands. But in Great Britain, the men and women are expected to bow/curtsy.

Don't Forget to Keep Up.

If you're hosting royalty, it is important that you maintain a similar pace by walking alongside them and introducing them to everyone as you make your way through the room.

Got all that? Now you should be all set to meet your prince charming!
