Poor Naomi Watts forgot all her mattifying products at home… But wait! She's in France–the beauty capital of the world! We take it back. This oil slick was Naomi's own fault. She knows better than to brave a wall of camera flashes looking like she hasn't cooled down from the gym.
We're also not thrilled about that frosty pink lipstick. It's too "I just picked this lipstick up at the drugstore for movie night" for the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. On a positive note, we will say we did love Naomi's side-swept loose curls.
Beauty Bailout: Perhaps Naomi purposely hit the red carpet with blinding shine because she wanted to give us the opportunity to share with you the ways to avoid an oil slick as the temperatures soar.
Before you even put on a speck of makeup you need to bump up your skincare routine. After cleansing, apply a clay-based, anti-aging and detoxifying mask like Perricone MD Chloro Plasma that will vacuum your pores without drying out your skin.
Following with an oil-free mattifying moisturizing lotion (not cream!) like Shiseido Pureness Matifying Moisturizer. Then, apply a mattifying primer like Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector.
Now, you don't want to use too much powder if you have any fine lines or wrinkles (more than one layer of powder can settle into lines, making you look older) so we would recommend starting with a mattifying foundation or bb cream like Dr. Brandt BB Matte with Signature Shinerase. Tip: Mattifying foundations and bb creams tend to dry quickly, so make sure you blend the product fast with a makeup sponge!
Next, you should switch out your cream and gel blush for a powder version. Apply the blush with a domed blush brush on the apples of your cheeks (smile to make them more pronounced) and pull upwards for extra lift.
We all know that shine usually waits until after you leave your house to rear its ugly head. So, make sure you throw the right touch-up tools in your handbag. Our favorite touch-up powder is Benefit The Porefessional Agent Zero Shine, which we use over our makeup and is small enough to fit into most evening bags.
Our best secret weapon? Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets! These little bad boys soak up shine without smudging makeup or leaving a powder finish. They're a little larger than a credit card so they'll even fit in your pocket. We warn you–you'll become addicted.
We just wish we could have been at Cannes so we could have stormed the red carpet with powder and blotting sheets and saved Naomi. There is nothing we hate more than calling out one of our favorite stars for a beauty faux pas, but you know we're hoping that this "tough love" will help prevent them from making the same mistake again. Naomi, we see this shine fest again you better expect a gorilla intervention.
