You may know McG for his producing work on hit shows such as The O.C., Supernatural and Nikita, or for directing Charlie's Angels and the upcoming action-thriller 3 Days to Kill, starring Kevin Costner and Amber Heard. But McG actually has some surprising musical roots.

McG stopped by Chelsea Lately on Thursday and dished about how he began his career in the music industry.

"So before you were a director, you were the lead singer of Sugar Ray?" Chelsea Handler asked.

"I don't think it is fair to say I was the lead singer," McG revealed. "My best friend growing up is Mark McGrath."

So McG might not have been the lead singer—he described himself more as "the sidekick"—but he did help the band put together their first music video.

"We made a music video and snuck it into a pizza box and sent it to the head of the record company. And they got a record deal," McG said.

And the rest, as they say, is history.
