We Predict

Album of the Year

  • The Contenders
  • Taking the Long Way, Dixie Chicks
  • St. Elsewhere, Gnarls Barkley
  • Continuum, John Mayer
  • Stadium Arcadium, Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • FutureSex/LoveSounds, Justin Timberlake

We Say...
Stadium Arcadium:  Despite the stiff competition, the Peppers are a lock. Why? Well, the sock-wearing rockers are old enough to be wearing support hose on their funk sticks, and they put together a double album that showed a firm grasp of past stuff while still rocking, um, hard, like a bunch of horny dudes half their age.

Ted Casablanca Says...
Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds has my vote, albeit a tad grudgingly, if for no other reason than its shrewd marketing strategy. After all, J.T. waited to release "What Goes Around" (his best single,in my opinion) to coincide with his much publicized breakup with the, oh, slightly older, Ms. Diaz. Now, we can't help but wonder, What did that girl do to you, J.T.? It's all rather sexy stabby-in-the-backy, no?

Record of the Year

  • The Contenders
  • "Be Without You," Mary J. Blige
  • "You're Beautiful," James Blunt
  • "Not Ready to Make Nice," Dixie Chicks
  • "Crazy," Gnarls Barkley
  • "Put Your Records On," Corinne Bailey Rae

We Say...
James Blunt:  You'll think we're crazy, but we're sure—Blunt is taking this one home. Seriously, this category could probably go to anyone and not be a bad choice, but once Blunt sang this song on Oprah, it was all over. Grammy voters—like your mom, your sister, your girlfriend—was totally seduced by his sensitive charms.

Kristin Veitch Says...
This one has to go to Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy," 'cause, I mean, really, is there anyone in the entertainment industry who doesn't relate to a song about losing his or her mind? Rehab, scandal, "exhaustion," sex tapes...H-town is loco town, my friends! And if by chance there's a single soul left who isn't feeling all that nutty, the sickening overplay of that Blunt song should do the trick.

Song of the Year

  • The Contenders
  • "Be Without You," Johnta Austin, Mary J. Blige, Bryan-Michael Cox and Jason Perry, songwriters (Mary J. Blige, singer)
  • "Jesus, Take the Wheel," Brett James, Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson, songwriters (Carrie Underwood, singer)
  • "Not Ready to Make Nice," Martie Maguire, Natalie Maines, Emily Robison and Dan Wilson, songwriters (Dixie Chicks, singers)
  • "Put Your Records On," John Beck, Steve Chrisanthou and Corinne Bailey Rae, songwriters (Corinne Bailey Rae, singer)
  • "You're Beautiful," James Blunt, Amanda Ghost and Sacha Skarbek, songwriters (James Blunt, singer)

We Say...
"You're Beautiful":  Despite the song being nominated this year, we feel like we've been hearing it for, like, 20 years. And we mean that in a good way—well, mostly. In any case, more than any other song, save the not nominated "Crazy," this is what we will think of when we recall the tunes of 2006. Or 2005. Or...

Hollywood Party Girl Says...
Blunt's "You're Beautiful" topped the charts and was even played twice on Smallville. Plus, the artist chose Mischa Barton to star in one of his videos. With all that beauty, he's bound to win.
