CBS has gone with a lateral pass.

The network announced Monday it is moving the 61st Annual Emmy Awards up a week, from Sept. 20 to Sept. 13, to avoid airing it after a football doubleheader—an occasion which often leads to a tardy start for the night's prime-time programming.

"This is better for the live event, the broadcast and our audience at home," said Jack Sussman, executive VP of Specials, Music and Live Events for CBS.

The date for this year's Emmys, with its expanded lists of nominees and tweaked voting process, had been selected before the NFL released its 2009 television schedule.

Nominees for TV's star-studded ode to TV will be announced July 16.

And don't worry, there will be football on the 13th, as well, one game starting at 1 p.m.
