Yeah, Baby! Toy Fair Gets Sequel-ized
"Scooby-Doo, where are you?"
That's right, a recycled Hanna-Barbera cartoon--soon to be a live action/CGI flick from Warner Bros.--is leading Hollywood's charge into 2002, as toymakers hope to jumpstart sales with a slew of movie-related action figures, games and other goodies. From the re-imagining of Scooby and Spider-Man, to can't-miss franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, this year already appears ready-made for the nation's Happy Meals.
Then there's Austin Powers, which is in full merchandising mode for its upcoming third installment, Goldmember...er, make that the untitled Austin Powers 3.
To welcome the super spy, gamemaker USAopoly is rolling out a line of shagadelic board games, including Austin Powers Pictionary and a special mojo-friendly, velvet backgammon set. The company also is releasing an Austin Powers trivia game with questions from all three movies. (The toughest question: What the heck are they going to call the third movie?)
Meantime, here's a rundown of what other movie and TV-related shwag is on display in Gotham:
From the grown-up Queen Amidala posters to Jango Fett action figures, expect an attack of the Clones goodies this year in toy stores. One favorite in the Star Wars onslaught: An 18-inch version of R2-D2 from Hasbro that responds to voice commands, includes infrared scanning technology--and even has a cup holder. No word, however, on how well it performs when transmitting holograms from distressed princesses.
After scoring a family-style hit with 2001's Spy Kids, pint-sized stars Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega showed up at the Times Square Toys "R" Us this week to show off their even-more-pint-sized action figures and spy gadgets for Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams.
Harry Potter has a new book due this year and a big-screen sequel (The Chamber of Secrets) due in November. To mark the blitz, Warner Bros. has licensed a new set of Harry Potter LEGOs (including a Quidditch playset) and the all-important Polyjuice Potion Maker.
Jessica Alba posed for photos Sunday with a mini-butt-kicking version of her Dark Angel alter ego, as hers was just one of several Fox shows getting the action-figure treatment. Meanwhile, Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans will get to relive season five with a new set of trading cards, and The X-Files will release more action figures (featuring the debut of Robert Patrick's Agent Doggett), as well as trading cards and lunchboxes.
In the superhero department, the WB's new hit Smallville has given Superman yet another angle in toy stores. DC Direct is creating a new set of action figures based on Tom Welling's young version of Clark Kent, not to mention Lana Lang and Lex Luthor, due later this year.
Finally, with Scooby-Doo hitting theaters in June, Warner Bros. is readying a host of new toys, including a Mystery Machine model kit, a Barbie doll created to look like Daphne (aka Sarah Michelle Gellar...wait, does that mean Freddie Prinze Jr. gets to be Ken?) and a new "mystery-solving Scooby-Doo," replete with Tiki torch.
The week-long 2002 Toy Fair kicked off February 7 at Manhattan's Jacob J. Javits Convention Center.
