Woo-hoo! The Simpsons Goes for a Ride
The Simpsons are getting taken for a ride.
Universal Studios confirmed Tuesday it was creating a new attraction based on the dysfunctional cartoon family at its theme parks in Orlando and Hollywood.
The ride, which Universal described as "a hysterical, almost unimaginable adventure," will take over the locations formerly occupied by Back to the Future: The Ride at both parks. It is expected to open in spring 2008.
Parkgoers will reportedly join Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson on the motion-simulation adventure, which will feature a high-speed tour of Springfield's Krusty Land, Krusty the Clown's interpretation of an amusement park.
The attraction aims to incorporate the show's signature humor, with the original actors voicing all the familiar characters that pop up in between jolts, bumps, dips and plunges into darkness.
"The ride is designed to duplicate the Simpsons home-viewing experience, only at high speed and with lots of screaming," creator Matt Groening said in a statement.
Earlier this month, Universal said it planned to shell out $120 million on updating its attractions. The company did not reveal how much it paid 20th Century Fox to license The Simpsons.
In addition to the ride, other Simpsons elements, such as costumed characters and a variety of souvenirs, will be added to the theme parks in the coming months.
The new attraction ties into the upcoming feature film based on the orange-skinned family, which opens July 27.
The long-running series is currently in its 18th season and will air its 400th episode May 20.
Meanwhile, published reports have suggested that Universal still has one or two more film- or TV-related projects up its sleeve, with heavy speculation about the possibility of a Harry Potter-themed attraction.
