Witch's "Wicked" Injury
Memo to Idina Menzel: That's break a leg...
The Tony-winning Wicked star suffered a cracked rib during the Saturday matinee of the smash Oz-themed musical after she fell through a trap door in the stage.
The accident occurred in the second act, as Menzel, who plays titular spell-caster Elphaba, was set for her big melting moment. She is supposed to exit via the trap door and be safely lowered on an elevator. But a show rep says the elevator had already begun moving before Menzel entered, causing her to tumble.
With its star hobbled, the matinee was interrupted for 45 minutes as understudy Shoshana Bean donned the green makeup and pointy hat to finish the show.
Bean also subbed for the Saturday night show and Sunday's matinee, which was supposed to be Menzel's swan song.
Ever the trouper, Menzel made a brief appearance at the end of the Sunday performance. Appearing in an orange sweatsuit (her broken rib prevented her from getting into full costume), Menzel gutted out the closing scene, including singing the finale with fellow witch Jennifer Laura Thompson and the rest of the cast.
After taking a bow, she came back for a curtain call. "I love you all," she said. "It's been the best year of my life. Thank you."
The broken rib caps a rough few weeks in an otherwise breakthrough year for Menzel. Beginning last month, she had been accompanied to the Gershwin Theater by bodyguards after somebody sent three letters threatening Menzel and her husband, actor Taye Diggs.
Menzel, who, in an upset, won the Best Actress in a Musical Tony Award for Wicked last June, is expected to recover in time to begin shooting the movie version of Rent, in which she'll reprise her stage role of Maureen alongside Diggs, who will play evil landlord Benny. Cameras are slated to roll in March.
