Winona Trial Set
Winona Ryder's next project: Trial.
A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge on Wednesday set an October 7 trial date for the two-time Oscar nominee accused of coming down with a case of sticky fingers at a Beverly Hills department store.
In setting the date, prosecutors revealed a plea-bargain deal that would have settled the matter without an L.A. Law courtroom scene had been pulled. It wasn't known what the terms of the dead deal were.
A new deal, of course, could still be cut, even after the trial opens. Shepard Kopp, an attorney for Ryder, told reporters "never say never." (The tough-talking district attorney's office came close to saying just that, though, noting it now expected the case to be settled via trial.)
Ryder wasn't on hand for Wednesday's legal machinations. But she'll be front and center should the trial go down as scheduled in two-and-a-half weeks.
"Winona is looking forward to the chance to prove herself innocent of all the charges," Kopp said.
The actress, who turns 31 on October 29, stands accused of going on an unlawful shopping spree at the 90210-based Saks Fifth Avenue last December 12. Police and store officials say they interrupted the Girl, Interrupted star as she attempted to walk off with nearly $6,000 in Saks merchandise. The cops also say they caught her with a prescription painkiller, oxycodone, for which she, um, didn't have a prescription.
Ryder faces felony counts of grand theft, second-degree burglary, vandalism and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. If convicted, the Generation X gamine could be sentenced to up to three years in the slammer.
Last week, prosecutors filed a motion declaring it had evidence of prior misdeeds by the Mr. Deeds actress. It's not known what that evidence is. The Saks bust was Ryder's first arrest, records show.
Ryder's camp maintains she was unfairly targeted by Saks employees who wanted to nab a celeb during the holiday shopping season.
