Why Private Practice Is Sick of Wednesdays

Private Practice ABC/JUSTIN STEPHENS

Opposite the Grammys special last week, Private Practice looked healthy again. Back against Criminal Minds last night, its pale, waxy complexion returned.

The fading ABC sophomore show was watched by about 6.9 million, Nielsen estimates show, down about 1 million from last week and far behind CBS' crime series in both total viewers (14.7 million) and the 18-49 demo.

In January Private Practice is moving to Thursdays behind sister show Grey's Anatomy.

Elsewhere, CBS' The New Adventures of Old Christine (8.3 million) and Gary Unmarried (8 million) were up over their season averages; Fox's Secret Millionaire (7.2 million) held up OK from its premiere week; the NBC holiday special Little Spirit: Christmas in New York (5 million) was a Rosie-size flop; NBC's Life (5.5 million) struggled; and NBC's Law & Order (7.5 million) was no match for CBS' CSI: NY (13.2 million).

Fox's Bones (4.5 million) was a rerun; the CW's Stylista (1.3 million) offered a new episode at 9 p.m.—and ran fifth in the hour among women 18-34.
