Who Made the White Stripes?

A former business associate is trying to paint the White Stripes as not entirely responsible for their own musical success.

Detroit producer Jim Diamond has sued the Grammy-winning band in U.S. District Court, claiming that he played a key role in shaping the White Stripes' signature sound and contending that he deserves royalties from the two albums he worked on at his Ghetto Recorders studio when the band was just starting out.

Band members Jack White and Meg White have denied Diamond played a part in creating their sound. They claim the $35 an hour they paid him for his services at the time is all he is owed.

Diamond is listed as coproducer on the band's self-titled first album, released in 1999, and sound mixer on De Stijl, released in 2000.

He never signed a contract with the White Stripes, as the band was on a small label at the time and no one involved expected the albums to make any money.

But in 2002, the band was signed to V2 Records and received a $3 million advance, per Diamond's lawsuit.

The first two albums were re-released, and to date, have sold 587,000 copies in the United States, per Nielsen SoundScan.

Diamond's suit estimates the albums have sold more than a million units worldwide.

Last month, U.S. District Court Judge Avern Cohn ruled Diamond had enough of a case to let a jury decide whether he is in fact owed a share of the millions generated by the albums.

"It is a meritless case which will be defended with vigor," White Stripes attorney Bert Deixler said in a statement.

A June 12 trial date has been set in the case.
