What I'm Buying for Tom and Katie

Didn't get an invite to the big TomKat wedding party tomorrow, here in L.A.? You know—the bash for all their friends who couldn't make it to Italy last month?

Yeah, me neither. But I may still pick up a little gift for the cuties while I'm out shopping this weekend. Target has a sweet little chip-and-dip set for $11.24 on sale. Or hmmm...something tells me this antique bronze armillary from Wal-Mart would totally go with their decor. Heck, at just $6, I could get them a pair, so they could play war of the worlds with them!

Okay, let's be serious here. A rep for the newly betrothed won't say what, if anything, TomKat has requested about gifting, but that shouldn't stop us from asking someone else.

I checked in with my pal Carol Brodie at Robb Report, a magazine geared to the world's wealthiest people on earth. And here's something from the magazine's December gift guide that would be perfect: a $2 million donation to provide care for the 550 endangered American Elms that line Central Park along Fifth Avenue. Not only would the trees be helped, but the Cruises would get an inscribed plaque with their names installed in the famed urban playground.

"I'm sure Tom and Katie will spend a lot of time in New York City and will bring Suri to play in the park," Brodie said. "Wouldn't it be great if there was a plaque with Suri's name on it that she can see when she's playing?"

Nice, but how about something sweeter? For friends with a little more disposable income (I'm looking at you, Posh and Becks!), Brodie says the Michael Cluizel Chocolate gift is a good way to go. The package includes $200 worth of chocolate to be delivered weekly—for life. Can't eat that fast? Well, a chocolate sommelier will design a room to store the chocolate as well. The bride and groom will also be given a private tour of the Cluizel factory in Damville, France. Cost? $4 million!

Jo Gartin, a celeb party planner who has handled weddings and baby showers for Brooke Shields and Courteney Cox, also has a delicious idea. "Arrange a private chef to come to their home for a cooking class," she said. "They can end the evening with an intimate dinner at home that they prepared."

Barneys New York creative guru (and author) Simon Doonan doesn't want baby Suri to be left out. "There is only one possible gift," he told me from London. "Matching chinchilla bikinis, with a tiny one for Suri."

One of the best—and most practical—ideas I got was from Tom Delavan, an editor at large at one of my favorite magazines, Domino. "The new Bose Quiet Comfort 3 headphones for $349!" he suggested. "It helps keep paparazzi noise at a minimum and helps with solitude. They fool people into thinking you are listening to music."

But they certainly won't want to wear the headphones if I get them a private Fleetwood Mac concert, as recommended by In Style Weddings editor Sarah Gray Miller. TomKat's first dance as husband and wife, you'll remember, was to Mac's classic "Songbird."

Well, a concert at the Staples Center in L.A. costs a minimum of $137,000, and that doesn't include food or anything. I guess I could pick up some sandwiches at Subway...

Oh, heck—I think I'm gonna stick with the armillary.
