What Happened to Gerard Butler?

While it's not a transformation like Jersey Shore's JWoww, I have to admit I was one of the many people who didn't immediately recognize Gerard Butler when he hit the red carpet at yesterday's Hollywood Foreign Press Association luncheon.

The Scottish hunkster is noticeably thinner. His hair is shaggy and many shades of blond.

What gives?

It's all work. His rep assures me that the 300 star has slimmed down and scruffed up for his role in Mavericks, a film about the life and death of big wave surfer Jay Moriarity.

Butler plays Moriarity's mentor, Ricky "Frosty" Hesson. The drama is expected to start shooting in October.
