Welcome to Nelly "Country"

East and West coast rappers, beware! It's Middle American rap that's topping the charts these days.

St. Louis-based hip-hopster Nelly proved he doesn't need a coastline to be number one as his latest, Country Grammar, sold another 191,000 copies to hold the top spot on the pop album sales charts for a fifth straight week. Country Grammar undoubtedly received a boost last week thanks to the MTV Video Music Awards, at which Nelly became a last-minute replacement for the MIA DMX.

Also getting an MTV boost was Detroit native Eminem, who tied 'N Sync with a ceremony-best three MTV VMAs. Em climbed one spot to number two with The Marshall Mathers LP. ('N Sync, meanwhile, experienced the most upward movement in the top 10, as the band's No Strings Attached jumped three spots to number five with 107,000 copies sold.)

And Louisiana-born C-Murder added to the Middle America hip-hop hype, scoring the highest debut for the week ended September 10. The rapper, the younger brother of No Limit president Master P, sold 76,000 copies of his third solo offering, Trapped in Crime, for a number nine bow.

Despite her near-naked appearance on the MTV VMA ceremony, Britney Spears lost her longstanding hold on the number two spot. Her latest, Oops!...I Did It Again, fell to the number three position with 142,000 copies. Creed held tight at number 4 with Human Clay, Now That's What I Call Music! 4 charted at number six, 3 Doors Down's The Better Life was seven, and Papa Roach's Infest was up one to number eight.

DJ Clue kept New York in the house by rounding out the top 10 with his new album, Backstage Mixtape.

Ice Cube associate Mack 10, who was part of the 1996 all-star Westside Connection, nabbed a number 19 bow, moving 47,000 copies of his new solo album, Paper Route.

Latin Christian female vocalist Jaci Velasquez, who's up for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards Wednesday, scored a number 49 bow with her Crystal Clear selling 25,000.

Among the week's other notable debuts were two very different compilations. The pop collection Platinum Hits 2000, featuring singles by Ricky Martin, Savage Garden and Destiny's Child, entered the charts at number 63 with 21,000 sold. And Loud Rocks clocked in at number 108. The album, marking Loud Records expansion into the rock market, features rock artists rerecording hits from the label's catalog with the rapper's who originally performed them. Collaborations include Ozzy Osbourne with Wu-Tang Clan, Sugar Ray with Tha Alkaholiks and Incubus with the late Big Punisher.
