Weiland Pleads to DUI

Scott Weiland celebrated his 36th birthday last October with a literal bash. Now he's ready to make amends.

The trouble-magnet rocker, fresh off his first tour with new band Velvet Revolver, was in a Los Angeles courtroom Friday to plead no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge.

Weiland was originally rung up on Oct. 27, his B-day, after smashing his BMW into a parked car. Police say he tried to flee the scene, but was eventually collared and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

A judge will determine Weiland's fate on Thursday.

The singer is no stranger to the Los Angeles court system.

He's had a string of drug-related arrests over the past decade, leading to innumerable stints in jail and/or rehab. Before his October arrest, he was busted in May 2003 for heroin possession.

That arrest came just weeks after he joined with ex-Guns N' Roses players Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum to form Velvet Revolver. Weiland's subsequent stint in court-ordered rehab forced the supergroup to put off plans for its first tour.

In January, he was ordered back to the live-in rehab center after a judge determined the singer skipped out too early. Facing potential jail time if he didn't comply--which would have again derailed Velvet Revolver's inaugural tour--Weiland managed to make it through, and in April he was cleared to join his bandmates on the road.

The band finished the bulk of its tour dates last month. (A New Jersey show was rescheduled until July 29 after Slash and wife Perla Hudson welcomed their second son, Cash Anthony Hudson; the guitarist wanted to take a month to be with the newborn.)

And the ongoing Weiland drug drama didn't affect album sales--Velvet Revolver's rookie release, Contraband, debuted at the top of the Billboard charts last month.
