Weiland Pilots Himself into Jail

Scott Weiland is going to rock steady in jail for awhile.

The frontman for the recently reunited Stone Temple Pilots was sentenced to eight days in jail after pleading no contest to misdemeanor driving under the influence stemming from a November arrest after a minor fender bender on a Los Angeles freeway.

Weiland, who had his lawyer enter a plea on his behalf today in Van Nuys Superior Court, must do the time by May 28.

But he'll probably want to have left the bars behind him long before that.

STP is scheduled to take the stage May 17 at the Rock on the Range Festival in Columbus, Ohio, in what will be the group's first live show together since 2002.

The on-the-wagon, off-the-wagon musician also received four years' probation, was fined about $2,000 and was ordered to take part in an 18-month alcohol program. It could have been much worse, though—he was originally looking at a possible year in jail for DUI with a prior conviction.

He was barely clear of a previous three-year probation sentence from a 2004 DUI bust when he collided with another vehicle while pulling onto the Hollywood Freeway and, per his arrest report, declined to take a chemical test.

Weiland was booked on suspicion of DUI and released after posting $40,000 bail. He subsequently checked into rehab in February, but a rep for the band he was fronting at the time, Velvet Revolver, maintained he had not been driving under the influence and that a blood-alcohol test would clear the singer.

Velvet Revolver dumped Weiland earlier this month for "his increasingly erratic onstage behavior and personal problems."
