So You Think You Can Dance: Life Is All Right in America, if You Can Fight in America
It became evident tonight that So You Think You Can Dance shares the same elemental virtue of every other show we love on TV: character.
Character, yes, in the sense of personality and persona—most of these dancers are firecrackers of charisma—but perhaps even more visible on this show is character in the sense of honor, virtue, personal strength, fortitude and courage.
Vegas Week is no less than a war, and we saw through the four days of tryouts that these dancers are not just performers but soldiers, as stalwart and deeply moral as any military academy cadets (although probably a great deal bendier).
These little warriors do not fight for a particular morality, but rather with a deeply ingrained sense of morality ("Excuses are tools of the incompetent," "We learn from our mistakes," "I will work so hard for you"), and that is what makes their work onstage so truly virtuous and therefore beautiful.
Perspiration and inspiration, together again, and kicking ass...
I'm personally rooting for Alex Wong, the brothers Kasprzak and Caitlin Kinney, but who's on your top 20 wish list? Post in the comments!
