Is This Gossip Girl's Gilded Age or Great Depression?

Gossip Girl Cast Kurt Iswarienko/The CW

So what's the sitch with Gossip Girl? The ratings are flat (or, uh, falling, if you happen to believe in "numbers" and "facts"), and the fan caterwauling about storylines is getting louder and louder with each passing episode. Could TV's most glamorous show be succumbing to the country's larger woes and falling on hard times?

Most importantly, are the powers that be getting worried? What does the network think of the recent episodes? Are they feeling your pain?

Despite wildly negative fan responses to last week's "Age of Dissonance" and tepid reaction to this week's Nate-centric "The Grandfather," sources at the CW whisper that there is no serious concern about Gossip Girl.

"The storylines are so good," says an insider. "It was gone for so long they were expecting something amazing."

Well—warning, unpopular opinion!—if you were paying attention, you would have seen that "Age of Dissonance" was a bleeding masterpiece. Blair's massive failure and histrionic meltdown? Edith Wharton's fictionalized Upper East Side meets Gossip Girl's blog-crazy Upper East Side? Dan going totally off the rails and therefore being as hilarious as he's ever been in his schlubby, sweet life? This is good stuff, people!

What exactly flopped for you about the last two eps? What do you demand to see before the season's end? Post in the comments. Your articulate arguments for and against certain romances or characters can only help the producers know how to better tantalize you in the future. Go!
