It's here, Secret Circle fans: the midseason finale! In just eight episodes, the CW show has ramped up the drama—we've said goodbye to a main character (RIP Nick!), have become invested in multiple love triangles (Cadam! Diadam! Cake!) and have a conflicted traitor inside our coven of witches (How you livin', Jake?!).
We screened tonight's episode, "Balcoin," and let's just say that it's a game-changer. A huge one. Aside from a major shake-up in the Cassie (Britt Robertson) and Jake (Chris Zylka) relationship (which we'll get to in a minute), Here's what viewers can expect from TSC's midseason finale...
Shipping Ain't Easy: While the Adam (Thomas Dekker) and Cassie dynamic has been absent for a few episodes (and is for the most part in tonight's outing), Jake and Cassie's relationship takes a major turn, with our blond heroine asking Jake to the town's gala, acknowledging the burning hot chemistry between them in the process. Jake, our resident witch-hunting witch, is conflicted as he's supposed to kill her yet is developing genuine feelings for her. We don't want to spoil anything for ya, but we definitely teared up during one of Cake's scenes. Take from that what you will. (Note to executive producer Andrew Miller: In the words of Casper, can we keep Jake forever? Please and thank you!)
Unlikely Pairings Emerge: While Diana (Shelle Hennig) is busy getting her flirt on with Holden (American Dreams' Arlen Escarpeta), Melissa's (Jessica Parker Kennedy) hot cousin Adam is off spending time with another coven member: Faye (Phoebe Tonkin). Yes, Adam and Faye team up when they both become suspicious of Jake's interest in the town, the coven and Cassie. Lesson we learned during the episode? Adam basically has chemistry with every girl in the coven. Fayadam, anyone?
Blackwell, Blackwell, Blackwell! Yes, John Blackwell (or, as book fans like to call him, Black John), Cassie's father, is still a hot topic in tonight's episode when Cassie discovers the Blackwell family tree. We'll also discover that Amelia, Cassie's mother, wasn't the only witch back in the day who was harboring a crush on Blackwell. Dun-dun-dun!
Power Struggle: Charles (Gale Harold) and Dawn's (Natasha Henstridge) power struggle continues in tonight's episode and becomes worse than ever when they realize they, or current crystal-holder Charles rather, messed up the spell they put on Jane (Ashley Crow). Big time. Jane is completely out of it, shakes and all, and the diabolical duo worry it may be permanent. Ruh-roh!
Mythology Lesson: Prepare for some major witch mythology to be dropped by Isaac (JR Bourne), including more information on the dark magic inside of Cassie and a secret that could change the dynamics within the coven forever. Also, you know how the witches have the much-talked-about Elders? Well, witch hunters have a Council that they answer to. Pretty rad, right?
What's in a Name? Here's a small tease: "Balcoin," the episode's title, is actually a name. A surname. Speculate away!
