What's the best way to get into a Michael Bay summer blockbuster like Transformers: Dark of the Moon?

Simple, get together with some of your buddies and create "wing suits," special outfits that basically turn humans into flying squirrels, transforming otherwise boring BASE jumps into soaring experiences. That's what pro skier and precision sky diver J.T. Holmes did. So how exactly did he catch the explosion-happy director's eye?

As it turns out, when Bay isn't yelling "action" he's kicking back and relaxing with an episode of 60 Minutes. It just so happens the news show featured a segment on Holmes and the "Birdmen" showing off their rush-inducing garments, and according to Holmes, when Bay saw it, he needed it for his latest robot battle.

Of course, the director took the idea and made it bigger for his movie, shutting down parts of downtown Chicago so his crew of actual sky divers could soar between some of the tallest buildings in the world. No wide open spaces here.

Check out the video to see how Bay and his huge crew pulled off these daring shots. And whether you love or hate the Transformers movies, at least there's something to be said about filming actual people performing death-defying stunts.
