Walk Hard: Another Ace for Apatow & Co.?

Walk Hard: Jenna Fischer, John C. Reilly Gemma La Mana/Columbia Pictures

Yesterday, Sony offered a preview of and Q&A session for Walk Hard, a fictional (aka funny) biopic of legendary rock 'n' roller Dewey Cox (aka John C. Reilly). Judd Apatow is producing and cowriting—let's hope this likable dude finally gets to have a hit movie on his hands! I mean, besides Knocked Up and Talladega Nights and The 40-Year-Old Virgin

Young Jake Kasdan, whom we love because he made The TV Set, cowrites and directs. But does his movie look as funny as Spinal Tap? No. But during the Q&A portion of the day, Apatow et al. raved about the seminal rock satire, even though these two movies are, ultimately, very different.

Hard is a send-up of the way Hollywood glorifies musicians in hyperserious tribute films, some of which, as Apatow pointed out, have aired originally on Showtime. (I would like to watch it with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, both of whom may feel lampooned.) On a metagushy note, Reilly said what with all the musical theater he did as a kid, he's been preparing for this role his whole life.

And the man really can sing and do pretty much everything else, too. Reilly can be moving in The Hours, shake and bake with Will Ferrell and catch fish and forgo shaving with George Clooney. So, yes, John C. Reilly is definitely the man for the job.

And here's more:

Penis Alert!  Apatow was very exited to tell us that an actual penis—albeit flaccid—appears in the film. Funny, when you think of the title. Shut up, me. Anyway, they wouldn't say whose it is. But it's there. So yes, R rating. Hey, it hardly hurt Knocked Up at the box office.

Power Playahs:  The jolliest moment during the event came when a handler approached the stage and tried to tell Reilly he had to go back to work. He's currently shooting Step Brothers, directed by Adam McKay (he of Anchorman). As Apatow is producing, he stepped up and told that handler John was not leaving this Q&A to go back to work. It's cute when grown men fight, isn't it?

Jack White = God?  The White Stripes frontman plays Elvis Presley in the film, and Reilly, Apatow and Kasdan are no less than mesmerized by his work. White and Reilly do this great sort of Elvis-speak. Anyhow, Apatow revealed he was particularly devastated to learn that White is not just a rock star, an all-around cool guy and a great actor—he is funny, too.

Biopics Bring Out the Douche Bag in Everyone:  Reilly, who's been in his share of biopics, talked really funny about the ridiculousness of what happens on the sets of such films. He laughed at the general vibe, the whole "we have to get it right!" approach that goes along with the "based on a true story" thing. He didn't name names, but let's go out on a limb and wave hello to the cast and crew of The Aviator.
