Voting Nirvana
John Kerry has a way of bringing people together--at least alt-rock gods, anyway.
Surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic will make their first public appearance together in 10 years today at a Kerry get-out-the-vote event, according to Novoselic's publicist.
The Tuesday night rally takes place in Las Vegas at the Stardust Hotel & Casino.
While Novoselic is not expected to perform with the Foo Fighter frontman (Grohl has been active playing shows at Kerry fundraisers in Los Angeles), Novoselic and Grohl are expected to make public statements supporting Kerry's run.
Blink-182's Tom DeLonge and The West Wing's Melissa Fitzgerald will also be on hand, along with Kerry's daughter Alex. The event will kick off a national bus tour to rally Kerry-Edwards supporters across several swing states, including Nevada and Colorado.
Although Grohl and Novoselic have remained close in the years since Kurt Cobain's death, the two have shied away from public events together. According to Nasty Little Man PR, Tuesday's Kerry rally is the first occasion to warrant the former bandmates "pre-announced joint appearance."
While the Grohl-Novoselic reunion is strictly pro-Kerry--not unlike the just-concluded Vote for Change tour headlined by Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M. and Pearl Jam--there are several non-partisan celebrity efforts to get out the vote this fall, as the presidential election looms ever closer.
Just last week, Leonardo DiCaprio announced his efforts this fall to help young people find their way to the ballot box. The Titantic star helped craft a set of public-service announcements encouraging young people to vote in the Nov. 2 election. The spots feature several of DiCaprio's pals, including Samuel L. Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Benicio Del Toro.
P. Diddy got democracy fever earlier this year. The rapper, who freely admits he has slacked when it came to past elections, launched his Vote or Die initiative in July.
Even Burger King is getting in the act, drafting Diddy, Snoop Dogg, Michelle Branch and Ted Nugent for a series of voting commercials bearing the tagline "Have it your way." (The spots are also online at www.haveityourway04.com.)
Meanwhile, Nirvana's long-delayed three-disc box set, With the Lights Out, is finally coming out Nov. 23. The collection, delayed after legal battles with Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, features 68 previously unreleased tracks, including a selection of Cobain's home demos.
