VMAs: Guns, Roses, Feuds, Poses
The revamped rockers, who've been touring in Europe and Asia and are working on a long-awaited CD, Chinese Democracy, that's scheduled to finally drop next year, performed a medley of hits, including "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Paradise City."
"I've just been trying to put this monstrosity together," Rose told MTV's Kurt Loder in a postshow interview from New York's Radio City Music Hall. "It's, how do you make a whole bunch of guys that are something else into something that already was?"
"This is one of the great performances," Loder told Rose. "This a great band."
Until the Guns N' Roses appearance, it looked like the watercooler moment from the show would involve Eminem and a threat to kick the ass of a certain bald, glasses-wearing deejay.
The verbal scuffle came just moments after Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (on loan from Late Night with Conan O'Brien) teased Moby--the butt of a riff on the number-one disc The Eminem Show--about his "feud" with Eminem. Moby laughed and played along. Eminem did not, shooing the puppet pooch away. (Damn that dog. Always stirring up trouble.)
Then Eminem was called to the podium to accept his moon man statue for Best Male Video from presenter Christina Aguilera (another of his celebrity feuds). In the midst of his speech--and, apparently, amid jeers from audience member Moby--Em became irritated.
"Keep booing. Keep booing, little girl," he said, addressing Moby. "I will hit a man with glasses."
As for the rest of the show... Highlights included an opening performance of the Sept. 11-inspired song "The Rising" by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (introduced by The Sopranos' James Gandolfini); an appearance by former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani; Fallon's opening riff on everyone from Eminem and the Strokes to Best New Artist Avril Lavigne and James Brown (who joined Fallon on stage); a tribute to late TLC singer Lisa Lopes; and Michael Jackson's "Artist of the Millennium" award (it was really just a cake marking his 44th birthday), presented by a leather-enrobed Britney Spears (looking like the first female member of the Village People).
"Michael Jackson looks great for 44, doesn't he?" said Fallon. "Between you and me, I think he's had some work done."
Among the lowlights: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen made a self-deprecating appearance that fell totally flat with the crowd (Full House haters!); Aguilera showed up in her typically trashy gear; the network aired some lame Osbournes interludes; and 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake made his hotly anticipated solo debut--and sounded a lot like he was performing at Michael Jackson karaoke night.
Of course, though the doling out of trophies is typically a secondary matter at the VMAs, dole them out they did, with Eminem's four leading the pack, followed by two each for Pink, No Doubt and the White Stripes.
Of course, the best news of the night didn't involve Guns N' Roses, Fallon's dead-on Enrique Iglesias impression or even Springsteen's performance.
Nope, that moment came when the entire Radio City and home audience could breathe a sigh of relief that, even though Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley were both in da house, they didn't kiss this time around.
