Viewers Get "Gotti"

Looks like TV has a new mob hit.

A&E's new reality series, Growing Up Gotti, featuring mobster daughter Victoria Gotti and the "Hottie Gottis" (her three sons), premiered to the biggest numbers in the 20-year history of the cable network.

Such things are relative, of course. Last Monday's premiere was watched by 3.2 million, a number far below those posted by TV's biggest mob hit, HBO's The Sopranos, which averaged about 10 million viewers last season on pay cable.

A&E is not to be deterred, though. The network has eagerly ordered an additional seven episodes of Growing Up Gotti, for a total of 20.

Unlike The Sopranos, which is about make-believe hoodlums, Growing Up Gotti is about real people who are the descendants of a real-life underworld legend, the late "Dapper Don" John Gotti, but who are themselves legit--unless you happen to find Victoria Gotti's tabloid column a crime.

Elsewhere in the TV week ended Sunday:

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie signed off from the second season of Fox's The Simple Life in fine fashion. The show's final two episodes averaged 9.6 million viewers, with the 9:30 p.m. Wednesday installment the week's most watched show among viewers who are aged 18-49 and not named Nick Carter.
Apparently, the thrill is gone. Fox's mom-swapping Trading Spouses fell to 7.8 million viewers (21st place), off 1.5 million viewers from the previous week's top 10 finish.
Another 7.8 million watched snack-chip exec Marty Okland offer 39-year-old accountant Stacy Leutner a ring and presumed Doritos discounts on the season finale of NBC's Who Wants to Marry My Dad 2? (22nd place).
USA's missing-person drama The 4400 was found by 6.1 million for its head-scratching season finale ("Other than the unanswered questions, I loved the show!," posted one confused newsgroup Netizen)--the week's most-watched basic cable show.
Seventeen-year-old Louisianan Shelley Henning was crowned Miss Teen USA before 5.3 million subjects (55th place) on NBC. No word on whether Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan have demanded a recount.
Did you know that one Sean Carrigan and one Corinne Van Ryck were the winners of NBC's summer bomb Next Action Star (averaging 4.3 million viewers), the reality series aimed at finding Hollywood's newest quip-ready bombadier? Did you know that NBC cast one Sean Carrigan and one Corinne Van Ryck in a TV movie, Bet Your Life, that also bombed (67th place, 4.5 million)? Did you know Billy Zane, who once cruised aboard Titanic, costarred in Bet Your Life? Does anyone know anything sadder than that?
The made-for-ESPN X-Games delivered fit-for-cable numbers in a prime-time outing Sunday night on ABC--90th place, 3.4 million.
UPN's hormone-crazed dating show, The Player, chatted up just 2.1 million (108th place) in its debut.

Overall, CBS led with the week, averaging 8.6 million viewers, and keeping more young'uns indoors than any other network. Its cause continued to be aided by the surging Two and a Half Men (second place, 12.8 million), which in repeats this summer has emerged as TV's biggest comedy hit.

NBC trailed with overall 6.5 million viewers (finishing second in the 18-to-49 category), followed by ABC with 5.3 million (fourth in the demo race) and Fox with 5 million (a second-place tie with NBC among the desirables).

The Amish-powered UPN outpaced the WB, 2.9 million to 2.3 million.

Here's a rundown of the 10 most watched prime-time shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:

1. CSI, CBS, 14.1 million
2. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 12.8 million
3. CSI: Miami, CBS, 12.5 million
4. Everybody Loves Raymond, CBS, 12.1 million
5. Without a Trace, CBS, 11.3 million
6. The Amazing Race 5, CBS, 10.6 million
7. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, NBC, 10.3 million
8. 60 Minutes, CBS, 10.29 million
9. Cold Case, 10.1 million
10. The Simple Life 2 (9:30 p.m., Wednesday), Fox, 9.9 million
