Vieira Makes ABC Her Final Answer

Meredith Vieira will continue to enjoy The View, but she's also getting a new vantage point--overseeing Regis Philbin's hot seat.

The level-headed cohost of ABC's morning gabfest is reportedly near a deal that will keep her on The View and make her the new host of the syndicated version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The decision follows some major wooing from CBS, who wanted Vieira to replace the departing Bryant Gumbel as co-anchor of The Early Show.

There's no official word yet from ABC, and Vieira remained mum about her new contract and hosting gig while chatting on The View Wednesday morning.

But Regis didn't, as he announced the news on Live with Regis and Kelly.

Added cohost Kelly Ripa: "If you work for ABC, you have to have two jobs."

The New York Daily News reports that the new deal will nab Vieira $1 million--a $500,000 raise from her current View salary and enough to fend off other network offers.

Vieira, 48, has been a wanted woman lately. Formerly a correspondent for both CBS' 60 Minutes and the news magazine West 57th, she's been a sought-after personality for both her news credentials and her light-hearted smack-talking on The View.

CBS already tried several years ago to hire Vieira, prior to signing Jane Clayson as Gumbel's co-anchor on The Early Show. ABC also once was interested in having her co-anchor Good Morning America before Diane Sawyer showed up. According to the Daily News, Vieira turned down both jobs out of concern for juggling her work and family life.

When Gumbel announced his exit from The Early Show earlier this month, CBS once again put Vieira at the top of its wish list. Now, the search continues.

For Vieira, hosting the syndicated Millionaire (produced by ABC parent Disney) will be less time-consuming than a network morning show. The gig has been up for grabs since Regis turned down the syndicated hosting job--not once, but twice--earlier this year.

Philbin, who initially expressed interest in hosting, soured on the idea after ABC hinted that the prime-time version of the game show might not be back this fall, not to mention reports that executives wanted a younger, comedian-type host.
