Some of music's greatest female singers took the stage tonight on VH1 Divas Celebrate Soul in New York City.
And while enjoying the sounds of Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples, along with those they inspired like Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and Jill Scott (who all sang in honor of various cities that founded soul music), we also got to remember one musical songbird that left us way too soon.
Amy Winehouse.
Rapper Nas, who is featured on Winehouse's upcoming posthumous album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, introduced the tribute held for the late singer by saying, "It didn't matter where she was from or what the color of her skin was, because Amy Winehouse was my true soul sista.
"Now I'm proud, we finally together on a song called 'Like Smoke.' And I'm here to honor a woman who had enough soul to last a lifetime. I wish she was here tonight, but like smoke, Amy Winehouse is still in the air lingering around all of us, and she'll be here for a long time to come."
Legendary singer Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings opened the performance by singing Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good," and were later joined by another classic crooner, Wanda Jackson.
Once the two left the stage, Florence + the Machine's Florence Welch took the spotlight with her rendition of "Back to Black."
But Winehouse was the topic of conversation way before the show even began.
Travie McCoy, Boyz II Men and Jessie J (among others) shared kind words about the late artist with E! News on the red carpet, saying what an amazing, beautiful singer she was and a huge impact to the music scene.
Nas also told E! News that she was the greatest talent he ever worked with and her death was a huge loss.
It goes without saying that Winehouse has left quite the legacy both with her fans and her peers in such a short time.
