Van Halen Cleared of Cancer
While former Van Halen frontmen David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar prepare for their summer tour, the legendary guitarist broke his silence this week to say he's conquered his bout with tongue cancer.
"I know I promised I'd get back to you and I'm sorry for the delay but I wanted to let you all know that I've just gotten a 100 percent clean bill of health--from head to toe," Van Halen writes on the band's Website, Van-Halen.com.
"I wanted to share the good news with you immediately," he added. "And of course, I thank you all for all your good wishes and prayers along the way. Now it's time to really get back to the music and fun...so party on and you'll be hearing from us very soon. All my love, Eddie."
Van Halen, 47, confirmed last year that he was battling cancer, following years of rumors regarding his health. In spring of 2001, he said he was examined by oncologists and head and neck surgeons at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
The guitar god, also a recovering alcoholic and heavy smoker, underwent hip replacement surgery in 1999 after damaging it from years of jumping around onstage.
Van Halen's health has been pegged as one major reason the band has not toured or released any new material in four years. The other reason, of course, is that they don't have a singer or a label: After two separate eras with both Roth and Hagar on the mike, the band's third frontman, former Extreme singer Gary Cherone, left the group after just one album, 1998's slow-selling Van Halen 3.
Despite rumors of a reunion with Roth, nothing ever materialized, and earlier this year, the band was dropped by its longtime label, Warner Bros.
Meantime, Hagar and Roth have decided to give the Van Halen fans something to chew on this summer--even if it doesn't involve Eddie and drummer-brother Alex Van Halen. Their tag-team tour kicks off May 29 in Cleveland.
Hagar told the syndicated radio show Rockline this week that the Van Halen brothers were initially approached last year to stage a tour with both former frontmen, but they rejected the idea.
"I think if they could do anything right now they would have done it," Hagar said. "No one has heard anything, they don't have a record deal, they've just fallen completely apart. Why, I don't know. I think it's the worst thing that could have ever happened to one of the greatest rock bands in the world."
Hagar, meanwhile, mounted the closest thing to a Van Halen concert in San Francisco this week, when VH bassist Michael Anthony joined him onstage for a 40-minute Van Halen set. The pair recently collaborated for a new project with Journey's Neal Schon, titled Planet Us.
