USA Preps "Scarface" Series
Make way for the bad guy.
USA Network confirmed it's planning a small-screen miniseries based on director Brian De Palma's knockout 1983 gangster flick Scarface, starring Al Pacino.
Details are scarce since the project is still in the preliminary stages of development. But a rep for the cable channel said the mini is likely to feature characters from De Palma's sweeping epic, originally an update of Howard Hawks' classic 1932 crime drama.
No word yet if producers will resurrect Tony Montana, Pacino's foul-mouthed Cuban refugee turned drug lord whose addictions led to his downfall.
Pacino's flamboyant portrayal helped Scarface transcend mixed reviews to become one of the most popular movies of the '80s, and one of the most quoted, with such lines as as "say hello to my little friend," "I bury those cock-a-roaches," and "make way for the bad guy."
Scarface, written by a then up-and-coming Oliver Stone, has also become widely celebrated within the hip-hop community, with rappers such as P. Diddy, Snoop Dogg, Eve and, yes Scarface, counting themselves members of the Tony Montana fan club.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, USA Networks was given the green-light to redo Scarface from parent company Universal, which owns the rights to the three-hour tale.
In September, the studio rereleased newly restored prints of Scarface in theaters for a limited run to hype the debut of a special 20th anniversary edition DVD. That two-disc set sold more than 2 million copies in its first week, and introduced the film to a younger generation of fans.
USA Network also reaped big ratings when 3.6 million viewers tuned in to watch the October 12 broadcast of Scarface, which was the highest-rated flick on basic cable that week.
No air date has been set for the miniseries, but don't expect USA to say hello to its little friend until 2005 at the earliest.
