Trial on Hold, R. Kelly Readies Tour
Now that he has plenty of time on his hands while his kiddie-porn trial is delayed yet again, R. Kelly has decided to hit the road.
The "I Believe I Can Fly" crooner is gearing up for a 39-date U.S. tour that will launch in November and continue through January.
According to publicist Allan Mayer, Kelly kicks off the trek Nov. 14 in Columbus, Georgia, and will be accompanied by Keyshia Cole, Ne-Yo and J. Holiday.
The itinerary includes stops in both large and small markets, from Atlanta, Philadelphia, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans and the R&B superstar's hometown of Chicago to North Little Rock, Arkansas, New Orleans, Sacramento, California, Columbia, South Carolina, and Louisville, Kentucky. The tour wraps up Jan. 12 in Hampton, Virginia.
This will be the third major tour for Kelly since Chicago prosecutors charged him with 21 counts of child pornography in 2002 stemming from a video that allegedly shows him having sexual intercourse with an underage girl. He has pleaded not guilty across the board.
His most recent trial date was Sept. 17, but the judge indefinitely postponed the case after the lead prosecutor went on maternity leave.
Mayer says Kelly's tour is contingent on approval from the judge—the singer has been prohibited from traveling outside the court's jurisdiction without permission for the past five years as part of restrictions placed on him after his indictment.
Kelly's attorney has submitted such a request to the State Attorney's Office, per procedure, but a spokesperson for the prosecutors could not confirm it had been received.
While all the dates are subject to the judge's approval, the court has been very good about letting Kelly pursue his job in the past. (Once approved, the tour information will be online at r-kelly.com.)
Although the trial date is up in the air, a status hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 2. Kelly is not required to attend.
The 40-year-old Kelly's latest outing is in support of his most recent album, Double Up, which hit stores back in May and went platinum, as well as his bizarro 22-part ghetto opera, Trapped in the Closet, which was released on DVD in August.
