Travolta Security Scare?
Mum's the word on reputed security concerns involving John Travolta.
A publicist for the star had no further comment Wednesday on a USA Today report detailing beefed-up precautions at events attended by the sometimes-beefy actor.
On Sunday, the newspaper said two bomb-sniffing dogs were sicced on the ArcLight Theaters in Hollywood prior to the U.S. premiere of Travolta's latest, A Love Song for Bobby Long.
As part of the security sweep, pens were confiscated and later, at a post-premiere bash, wallets were searched.
Travolta, who stars in the independent production as a long-haired college professor, caught the screening with actress wife Kelly Preston, but both arrived "very late," USA Today said.
"I think the best thing to say is 'no comment,' " rep Paul Bloch told Tuesday's USA Today when asked about the security measures.
According to the newspaper, Sunday was not an isolated instance.
On Monday, Travolta was escorted into the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills via the backstage area--a move red-flagged by USA Today. The 50-year-old Saturday Night Fever icon was on hand to be presented with the Hollywood Film Festival's Hollywood Lifetime Achievement Award.
The newspaper noted that guards trailed Travolta and Preston even as they walked out of a backstage bathroom.
By contrast, USA Today said, Travolta roamed freely in September at the Hollywood premiere of his fire-fighting drama, Ladder 49. Back then, he was accompanied by one lone bodyguard.
Celebrity-security expert Walter Masterson agreed some of the stepped-up tactics described in USA Today seem unusual.
"The dogs would be out of the ordinary," Masterson, owner of the Florida-based security firm, Protection Investigation Services, said Wednesday.
But Masterson didn't think something like a no-pen policy was unreasonable in an age of potentially deadly gadgets.
"Everything is a potential weapon--pens, combs and nowadays wallets," Masterson said, describing guns that look like pens, knives that look like Bic ballpoints and credit cards that pack push blades.
Whatever, if anything, has Travolta skittish, he and Preston weren't talking about it on Monday. Per USA Today, the couple instead joked about the gray hair Travolta sports in Bobby Long, opening Dec. 29.
Perhaps Travolta's camp is taking a cue from Be Cool, his next major release and a sequel to the hit-man comedy hit Get Shorty.
