Tragedy Strikes Ex-"Murphy Brown" Star

An awful accident, authorities say, has ripped apart the world of a once-popular sitcom star.

Police say they believe the live-in girlfriend of actor Robert Pastorelli accidentally shot herself to death Monday in the couple's Hollywood home.

Pastorelli is best known to audiences as Eldin, the artistic house painter on TV's Murphy Brown.

The victim is Charemon Jonovich, 25--Pastorelli's companion and mother of their infant daughter. Police say both Pastorelli and the baby were home when Jonovich put a bullet through her head at about 9:50 p.m. Monday. Cops arriving on the scene found the woman dead.

The actor was questioned by authorities. No foul play is suspected; neither is suicide.

"She accidentally shot herself," Los Angeles Police Lt. Anthony Alba told reporters today. "The investigation is continuing. This is a tragedy for all involved."

Through his publicist, Pastorelli, 44, said he is in "deep mourning and shock over the tragic and untimely death" of Jonovich.

"He is devastated by this profound loss and is now in seclusion so he can grieve in private with family and friends," the statement said.

Pastorelli costarred on Murphy Brown from 1988-1994. His most recent prime-time credit was the short-lived ABC crime drama Cracker (1997).
