Too Real: Ja Rule Charged in Canada

A message to all Canucks up in da club: Y'all best not step to Ja Rule!

The 28-year-old rapper-actor turned himself into Toronto police on Monday on charges stemming from an altercation at the city's Club Rouge last month.

During a brief court appearance, Rule (aka Jeffrey Atkins) was charged with assault causing bodily harm and then released on $10,000 Canadian bail (about $7,600 U.S.). He is expected back in court Aug. 30 to enter a formal plea.

Rule had been in Canada filming a remake of the aptly titled Assault on Precinct 13, an urban action thriller costarring Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne.

According to local media reports, loud cheers erupted in the hallways of the courthouse as Rule, wearing an oversized white T-shirt and jeans, was led into the courtroom by officers.

Few details of the actual alleged assault are available, since Ja Rule's lawyer, Steven Skurka, successfully obtained a gag order on legal proceedings. Skurka said the so-called "publication ban" was standard procedure to prevent having the trial heard "before a man ever walks into a courtroom."

Skurka also said in a statement that "there's no celebrity justice here...you don't get treated differently in this country if your name is Martha, Michael or Ja Rule. Everyone is treated the same."

Although a novice in Canadian court, Rule has racked up plenty of face time before judges.

The rap star was arrested earlier this month in Manhattan for driving without a license and marijuana possession. The marijuana charges were eventually dropped against the Queens-born emcee after he shelled out $550 in fines and court fees, but he did spend a few hours behind bars July 2 in New York.

Rule also found himself in a bit of trouble with Jamaican authorities three years ago. After an expletive-laden set during a 2001 concert, Jamaican police issued a summons for charges of indecent language. Rule never showed up for the hearing, claiming he had the wrong date for the hearing. Jamaican police eventually retracted an arrest warrant after Ja Rule appeared at a 2002 show there and apologized for his earlier cuss-happy set.

Rule has enjoyed varying degrees of success as a solo rapper since he burst onto the hip-hop scene in 1999 with his hard-hitting smash "Holla, Holla." His Pain Is Love debuted at number one on the Billboard charts in October 2001, and he scored a huge hit with his shamelessly poppy duet with Jennifer Lopez, "I'm Real." Ja Rule received a Grammy nomination last year for his duet with Ashanti, "Always on Time."

However, his 2003 release, Blood in My Eye, was savaged by critics and did not perform up to expectations.

The rapper has recently segued into acting. He has appeared in several films, most notably 2001's The Fast and the Furious and 2003's Scary Movie 3.

Rule's new record, R.U.L.E., is due to drop in November.
