"The Watcher" Pulls in Watchers
The slasher movie, in which Keanu Reeves wishes he could have been a no-show, debuted with just an estimated $9.1 million.
Reeves, who was virtually MIA from the film's marketing campaign, reportedly was miffed about his role in the film. When he originally agreed to do it some 10 years ago, he signed on for a small role. But, thanks to his recent box-office bankability from The Matrix, filmmakers inflated his role and, although Keanu couldn't extricate himself from the flick, he refused to do any publicity.
Overall it was a dismal weekend the movie industry would be happy to forget. With summer officially over and school officially back, the top 12 movies combined only managed to gross $44.7 million. (That was down over 28 percent from the same time last year, when the horror flick Stigmata (remember that?) finally knocked the smash hit The Sixth Sense out of first place.)
This year the second place slot was occupied by Nurse Betty, the dark comedy starring Renée Zellweger as a soap opera fanatic on a bizarre road trip. The well-reviewed USA Films release, which was a big hit at this year's Cannes Film Festival, earned an estimated $7.3 million from just 1,459 sites. It thus scored a much higher per screen average than the panned The Watcher, which played on 2,742 screens.
The only other new movie to debut in the top 10 was The Way of the Gun. The shoot-'em-up kidnapping drama, starring Ryan Phillippe and Benicio Del Torro, earned $2.2 million in ninth place.
In reissue, the cult hit This Is Spinal Tap still rocked on after all these years. The faux documentary had the highest per screen average, earning $54,000 on just 10 screens.
In limited release, the hip-hop concert documentary Backstage has earned $510,000 since opening Wednesday. In contrast, the hip-hop drama Turn It Up has only managed to score $600,000 since then, despite playing in over twice as many locations.
