Modern Family Kiss Happening for the Right Reasons
ABC/RON TOM
True Blood gets crap for being too sexualized, and Modern Family gets complaints for not having enough on "GayBC" as Jesse Tyler Ferguson calls it.
Backstage at the Emmys, Supporting Actor in a Comedy winner Eric Stonestreet told us, as we'd heard, the PDA episode between his character Cam and Ferguson's Mitchell is happening, but he wanted to make it clear it's not because of "public pressure."
"Quickly you learn that it's way better to have fans talking and caring about your show than not. We love that people care that much," Stonestreet told us about the "missing" gay kiss.
"But from a cast perspective, and inside the Modern Family perspective if you will, we always knew that [writers] Chris [Lloyd] and Steve [Levitan] have an arc for these characters. They are based on people they know. So, it's not as if anything was being avoided; it's just that they're going to write the show in a way that they want to write the show."
Continued Eric:
"Now it looks like we've sort of caved to public pressure, but this story was pitched last year! Just as a story when I'm in bike shorts—for the whole episode. It just got around to being shot this year. So we love that people care about it, and we're going to deliver on what people are asking for in a really great way."
Eric's hilar onscreen partner, echoed Eric's sentiments that they were not avoiding the gay kiss, especially not on ABC:
"It's a storyline. I'm glad the fans are so excited about the characters and want to see them happy. At the same time it's an amazing gay couple on television; we need to count our blessings. Small steps. It's not a choose-your-own adventure kind of sitcom. It's GayBC."
Awesome, is America ready? Better be!
Big, big congrats to the entire cast of Modern Family.
