That's "Sir" Mick Jagger to You

What a drag it is getting old. But getting knighted can't be so bad.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, the swaggering, womanizing wild man of rock 'n' roll (whose best shot for a royal title once seemed to be "His Satanic Majesty"), is now an honest-to-goodness knight of the British Empire.

The 58-year-old dino-rocker (affectionately nicknamed "Old Rubber Lips" by the British press) was knighted Saturday "for services to popular music," joining a growing roster of pop star knights that has included Paul McCartney and Elton John.

Jagger, who was nominated for knighthood by Prime Minister Tony Blair, was one of several Brits named on Queen Elizabeth II's birthday honors list Saturday. Others included directors Trevor Nunn and Jonathan Miller and painter Peter Blake.

Appropriately, the Rolling Stone expressed satisfaction with the honor.

"I was very pleased. I was also surprised, because I must admit I wasn't expecting to get it," he told Reuters.

"It's great to get an honor from your own country--although I have had honors from other countries," he added. "It also reflects really wonderfully on all the achievements of the Rolling Stones over the last 40 years."

Of course, Jagger's inclusion on the Queen's list (like Sir Paul and Sir Elton before him) has raised eyebrows among some Brits, considering his reputation for full, um, immersion in the "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll" lifestyle.

There was Mick's 1967 arrest for drug possession. And, aside from his one "official" marriage to Bianca Jagger and longtime union with Jerry Hall, Mick also had a rumored fling with David Bowie and acknowledged paternity of no less than seven children by four different women. Most recently, Jagger was ordered to pay $35,000 a month for the son he had with Brazilian model Luciana Morad.

While some have accused Blair of trying to get in good with celebs by making the nomination, others say it's tough to argue that Jagger doesn't deserve the honor, having fronted one of Britain's (and the world's) biggest rock 'n' roll bands for the past 40 years.

"Some of my best friends are knights. It is a much maligned group, but I am very happy to be joining them," Jagger said.

Meantime, Sir Mick won't have much time to enjoy his new title before hitting the road with the Stones in honor of their 40th anniversary. The band announced last month that it was planning a new greatest-hits album and a yearlong world tour starting in North America and then heading through Australia, Japan, Europe and what they hope will be their first-ever shows in China.

The band kicks off the trek in September.
