Teri Hatches Advice Book

Teri Hatcher has some pearls of wisdom to share with the Desperate Housewives demographic.

The 40-year-old star of ABC's hit soap-operatic satire has signed a deal with Hyperion to write Burnt Toast, an advice book for women approaching middle age. (Apparently there's more to it than getting a hit series.)

"I have had many women approach me, sharing their own stories, and ask me how it feels to have a second chance at 40," Hatcher said in a statement. "With this book, I truly hope to reach everyone that I don't bump into on the street and share my story."

The actress, who has had her share of ups and downs both personally and professionally, has become something of a feminist icon for women fast approaching the big 4-0.

After small roles in films like The Big Picture and Soap Dish, Hatcher first came to the attention of tube viewers in a memorable episode of Seinfeld, when her character famously told the breast-obsessed Jerry, "They're real--and they're spectacular!"

Hatcher became famous as the female half of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, the ABC comic book-based series that ran from 1993-97, and appeared in 1996's indie hit Two Days in the Valley. Her biggest big-screen star turn came as a Bond babe in 1997's 007 thriller Tommorow Never Dies.

Hatcher's career hit the skids soon thereafter, with the cancellation of Lois & Clark.

She delved into theater, playing the part of Sally Bowles in a national tour of Cabaret, and appeared in the Vagina Monologues. Aside from a role in a 2001's Spy Kids, the movie offers disappeared, and she wound up costarring with Howie Long in a string of Radio Shack commercials.

Her personal life wasn't much better. In March 2003, she filed for divorce from her second husband, actor Jon Tenney, with whom she has a 7-year-old daughter.

Then came her Desperate salvation. Hatcher's career was reborn on Wisteria Lane as single mom Susan Mayer. The role earned Hatcher a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. During her acceptance speech for the latter, Hatcher jokingly declared herself a "has-been."

Desperate Housewives not only ranked as the top-rated new series for the 2004-05 season, but also the top-rated new drama over the decade among total viewers and adults 18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research. The show is up for 15 Emmy Awards, including one for Hatcher.

"We're very excited to be publishing Teri's book because Hyperion feels that Teri has much to say that will be valuable to other women," said Hyperion's president Robert S. Miller. "Burnt Toast isn't a memoir--Teri's much too young for that--but it will draw on experiences from her daily life to which we feel that many women can relate, and they certainly don't have to be a celebrity to relate to Teri Hatcher."

Hyperion, which, like ABC is owned by Disney, will publish the book in the spring of 2006.
