Talent Springers for New Host

America's Got Talent has got itself a new ringmaster.

Jerry Springer has been tapped to take over hosting duties on the hit NBC show after Regis Philbin reportedly bowed out of repeating as emcee due to the heavy travel schedule involved. Last season, the Live with Regis and Kelly cohost had to shuttle back and forth between New York and Los Angeles.

"I am absolutely thrilled that Jerry has agreed to host the next season of our show for a number of reasons, he is the perfect person for this show," executive producer Simon Cowell said in a rare burst of kudos-offering. "I wish him—and he is going to need it!—the best of luck." (Ah, there's our Simon.)

"I've been around some of America's most talented individuals on my talk show for the last 16 years, so I'll feel right at home hosting America's Got Talent," Springer said.

Of course, NBC is probably hoping that profane insult-and-chair-flinging doesn't become the act to beat on the series' second season, which will premiere this summer.

Springer is currently in his 16th season as host of The Jerry Springer Show, where he made a name for himself refereeing spats between disgruntled husbands and wives, mothers and daughters, wives and girlfriends, and other odd couples.

A surprisingly touching showing on Dancing with the Stars helped America see beyond his tabloid-TV-peddler reputation, however.

"Jerry Springer is the perfect ringmaster to harness all the incredibly diverse talent of America's Got Talent under one big tent," said Craig Plestis, senior VP of alternative programming development and specials for NBC Entertainment. "To say the least, he is known for presiding over an unpredictable show where the unexpected is the typical order of the day."

Eleven-year-old singer Bianca Ryan (she's now 12) won the $1 million prize on the show's inaugural season and released her self-titled debut album in November.

But while we've been assured of at least one new face on the upcoming installment of America's Got Talent, a question mark remains next to Brandy, whose status as a judge has been up in the air since the Moesha star was involved in a fatal car crash in December.

Although two wrongful-death lawsuits have been filed against the singer-actress who, according to the California Highway Patrol, caused a chain-reaction collision that pushed a 38-year-old woman's car into oncoming traffic, the L.A. City Attorney's office is still determining whether to charge Brandy with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, as the CHP recommended in its report.
