'N Sync Beats the Heat

The competition might be warming up, but 'N Sync can definitely take The Heat.

The boys kept their winning streak alive as No Strings Attached fought off a strong charge from Toni Braxton's new album, The Heat to remain the nation's number one album for the week ended April 30.

'N Sync sold 248,000 copies last week, while Braxton moved just under 200,000. It's the closest any artist has come to dethroning the popsters in the six weeks their album's been out.

Braxton, who spent more time in the courts than the studio in recent years, filing for bankruptcy and suing her record label, proved she still has her chops. The Heat, the follow-up to her 1996 multiplatinum sophomore album, Secrets, features collaborations with Dr. Dre and longtime coproducer Babyface.

Last week's challenger for the chart throne, Joe's My Name Is Joe, was knocked back one spot to number three in its second week. The album sold 150,000 copies, down 136,000 copies from last week. Also down one spot was Sisqó's Unleash the Dragon, which clocked in at number four with 146,000 copies sold, according to industry sources.

Cypress Hill crashed the top 10 this week as their double CD set, Skull & Bones, sold a crushing 139,000 copies for a number five debut. The album has garnered attention for focusing on rap on one disc and rock on the other. In fact, there are two different versions of the first single, each with special guests. The rock version of "Superstar" features Everlast and the Deftones' Chino Moreno, while the rap take features Eminem and Noreaga.

Santana, whose Supernatural virtually had the lock on number one until 'N Sync's new album came around, fell to number six this week with 119,000 units. Also falling two spots was Destiny's Child, whose The Writing's on the Wall sold 92,000 copies for the number seven position.

Dr. Dre's 2001, which fell from the top 10 for the first time last week, was back in at number nine with 83,000 copies. Also re-entering the top 10 was DMX's ...And Then There Was X, which jumped from number 15 to number 10 with 83,000 copies sold.

Meanwhile, No Doubt's Return of Saturn dropped from the top 10 in its third week, falling to 11th place with 77,000 copies, just two weeks after a number two debut.

Mya's Fear Of Flying sold 72,000 copies to become the only other top 20 bow this week. Fear of Flying is the follow-up to the artist's platinum-selling 1998 self-titled debut. Just missing the top 20 was Neil Young, whose latest, Silver & Gold, placed at number 22 with 55,000 copies.

Finally, Jeff Foxworthy, who enjoyed 15 minutes of fame with his limited array of "You know you're a redneck if..." jokes, saw his Big Funny album land with a big thud. Foxworthy, the only comedy artist with a triple-platinum album, sold only 9,000 copies of Big Funny for a dismal number 143 debut. You know you're a washed-up comedian if...
