"Survivor" Tribe Leads CBS to Victory
After spending most of the past season playing backstabbing bridesmaid to NBC's revitalized, pregnant Friends, Mark Burnett's reality adventure still managed a first-place finish in the ratings, according to Nielsen Media Research.
But unlike last season, this was no blowout: Survivor: Africa's two-hour finale on Thursday averaged 27.3 million viewers, down 9.1 million from last season's Outback wrap-up. At 10 p.m., CBS' Survivor: Africa Reunion lost 30 percent of the finale's lead-in audience and got trounced by NBC's ER--lending support to the theory that this crop of contestants will enjoy only 7 1/2 minutes of fame, rather than the standard 15.
Still, it was enough for CBS to average a first-place 14.1 million viewers for the week ended January 13. NBC, meanwhile, nabbed a weekly win among the advertiser-friendly adults 18-49 group, but settled for third place among total viewers (12.79 million), behind pro-football powered ABC (12.84 million).
The Peacock's Thursday-night lineup was unfazed by Survivor, with second-place Friends nabbing 25.5 million viewers and third-place ER average 25.4 million viewers.
One week after college bowl games pushed ABC into first place, the Alphabet net found its strength from pro football this time around, drawing 18.8 million viewers to Monday Night Football's final matchup of the season, and luring 22 million viewers to Saturday's AFC Wild Card Playoff game between the New York Jets and Oakland Raiders.
Despite all the Jacko-jockeying that preceded it, ABC's telecast of the American Music Awards was down about 4 percent from last year's show, drawing 16 million viewers Wednesday night. The awardsfest easily topped CBS' rerun of Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special, which drew 11.5 million viewers.
Fox finished in fourth place for the week among viewers and adults 18-49, with its strongest performance coming from The Simpsons and Boston Public. Fox pretty much threw in the towel on Thursday night, airing four straight episodes of Family Guy against Survivor and NBC. (We'll just let you guess how that turned out.)
Among the junior networks, UPN continued slaying and smacking down the WB among total viewers (4.2 million viewers vs. 3.5 million) and adults 18-49 (1.7 rating/4 share vs. 1.5 rating/4 share).
Here's a rundown of the week's top 10 shows among total viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research:
