"Surreal Life 2": They're Baa-aack

The following should be read aloud, to the cadence of MTV's Real World opening monologue:

"This is the true story/of five has-beens and one wannabe/ picked to move into a house/and have their lives taped/to find out what really happens/when audiences tune in/and watch B-list celebs bottom out."

"Surreal Life! Season Two!"

That's right--it's time for demi-celebs on the verge of desperation to come together in a conflagration previously unimaginable to the viewing public.

While the first season gave us Webster's Emmanuel Lewis sharing bunk beds with bankrupt rapper turned evangelist M.C. Hammer, this season tantalizes with the promise of porn king Ron Jeremy swapping witticisms with Tammy Faye Messner, drama queen ex-wife of disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker.

Rounding out the has-been cast will be former Baywatch-beauty, Traci Bingham, washed-up rapper, Vanilla Ice and ChiPs star, Erik Estrada.

Then there's the wannabe category--while last year's cast got to feel slightly superior to Survivor alum Jerri Manthey, this year's cast can look down on Real World: Las Vegas's Trishelle--after all, she's not a real B-lister.

The motley crew will share the Hollywood Hills hideout for 11 days, during which time cameras will follow them as they interact with one another, as well as with average folks on the outside.

The casting process for SL2 was apparently a lengthy one, as numerous personalities approached producers about appearing on the show.

"We wanted to get worlds colliding, and I think that's been achieved," said Keith Cox, WB alternative chief, per Variety. "It's a tricky puzzle. You have to start with certain cornerstones, and then build inward. Tammy Faye was actually one of the first people we cast."

Producers cut the cast from seven to six members this season to allow for a weekly guest celebrity crib crasher.

"Having a revolving, big celebrity guest star every week--that person becomes our seventh cast member," executive producer Cris Abrego told Variety.

This season is being shot at the same digs as Surreal 1; however, the pad has apparently been spiced up for the new cast.

"It's very pimp, very Austin Powers love shack," Abrego said of the decor.

The pseudo-stars arrived on the scene Monday via Hollywood tour bus, having been picked up at Hollywood locations appropriate to their stature; Estrada, for example, will be found at a Winchell's donut shop, while Messner will be collected at the Hollywood Wax Musuem. No word on where Jeremy will be found...

Surreal Life Two is expected to kick off in early 2004. So far, the WB has ordered six half-hour episodes, though that number may grow, depending on how well the B-listers perform for the network.
