Suri's Dad Roams to Rome

Is the Tom Cruise publicity machine finally taking a break from its jet-setting promotional ways? Not even close.

Less than a week after the birth of daughter Suri, Cruise has forsaken diaper duty and turned up in Rome for the Italian premiere of Mission: Impossible III Monday night--and contrary to his initial promise to bail on the London and Paris legs of his European tour and return to his baby and fiancée Katie Holmes, the couch-hopping star has reinstated his respective RSVPs.

But lest you think Cruise, who appeared on ABC two days after Suri's birth to promote his spy sequel, would rather hype a movie than burp a baby, the star said the decision to carry out his promotional duties wasn't an easy one to make.

"My mission impossible was to be here today," he said at a press conference. "I didn't want to come. My daughter was just born, and I didn't want to leave her and her mother...I thought about not coming to Rome, but Kate said go and have fun."

Indeed, Cruise spent more time hyping his latest human production than cinematic one.

"It was everything that we wanted it to be and more," he said of Suri's birth. "It was really very spiritual."

One of Cruise's costars, Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, doesn't see anything wrong with his onscreen nemesis' one-track mind.

"When you have a child, as anyone knows who has them, that's basically all you want to talk about," Hoffman said.

As for the details of the newborn's six-day-old life, there wasn't much Cruise didn't feel like sharing.

"I changed her first," he said. "I change diapers all the time. I have to tell you I love it. We have a whole system worked out. It's the 'B and B.' She does the breast feeding, and I do the burping and changing the diapers. It's teamwork. It's fun."

Suri is Cruise's third child; he adopted daughter Isabella, 13, and son Connor, 11, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

Cruise's choice as to the first stop on his promotional whirlwind could have been a sentimental one--Rome was the site of TomKat's coming out party last spring, when Cruise first declared his unexpectedly manic love to the world at last April's David di Donatello Awards. (He later proposed to Holmes atop the Eiffel Tower, which might explain why he uncanceled his stop in Paris.)

Although he had a plane to catch, Cruise spent more than an hour after Monday's press conference signing autographs for well-wishers.

The now-reunited Mission: Impossible III gang will continue on with the European promotion, a quick-hitting global bombardment that was the brainchild of Cruise himself. After red carpets in Paris and London later this week, there's the May 1 opening in Mexico City followed by the borough-racing New York affair May 3. While Cruise is confirmed for the European and New York premieres, Paramount says he's undecided about the Mexico date.

The film opens May 5.
