Surgery, She Wrote

The erstwhile Jessica Fletcher has gotten herself into another pickle.

Murder, She Wrote star Angela Lansbury is set to undergo knee-replacement surgery in Los Angeles Thursday, her daughter has announced.

But Deirdre Battarra denies reports that her mother's plans to go under the knife are due to Lansbury's onstage spill last Friday, saying the procedure has long been scheduled.

The actress tripped over an electrical cord while performing in an all-star tribute to legendary composer Stephen Sondheim at the Hollywood Bowl. The gala celebration commemorated Sondheim's 75th birthday and honored his career as a Broadway fixture, drawing heavyweight supporters and friends like Lansbury, Warren Beatty, Barbra Streisand and Josh Groban.

"Her knee is so painful from years of dancing," Battarra said of her board-tapping mama. "She's pretty at ease about it all."

Lansbury, 79, expects to be hospitalized for five days and take up to two months for a full recovery.

Aside from 12 years of senior sleuthing on CBS' Murder, She Wrote, the London-born actress has had a lengthy career on Broadway, starring in the classic musicals Sweeney Todd, Gypsy and Sondheim's Anyone Can Whistle, and on the big screen.

The triple-threat has won four Golden Globes and been nominated three Academy Awards, most notably for her role in 1962's The Manchurian Candidate (Meryl Streep reprised last year).

But she also has the dubious distinction of being nominated for--but never winning--17 Emmys. She is expected to add another nod to her résumé, for her guest-starring role on Law & Order: SVU. That would put her in reach of Susan Lucci's record 18 consecutive Emmy losses. (Lucci did finally win in her 19th nomination.)

Lansbury will next be seen in the British children's film Nancy McPhee, opposite Emma Thompson and Colin Firth.
