Superman Reunites with Singer

Having just cleared a pretty tall building about $200 million high, Superman may be about to take off again.

Bryan Singer has signed to direct and produce a sequel to Superman Returns, Warner Bros. confirmed Monday.

Singer is the only person in place on a project that is more a notion still than a project. The studio said there is no script, no budget and no targeted release date.

Not even Superman Returns cape-wearer Brandon Routh is a lock for a return engagement, although Variety, which first reported the Singer signing, said Warners has an option on the actor for a sequel.

For Singer to become the first building block in a new Superman project, it appears as if a potential stumbling block first had to be successfully navigated.

Over the summer, Warners essentially made it known that any Superman Returns sequel would be dependent on the Man of Steel movie making at least $200 million at the box office.

And though it was a marathon, requiring 17 weeks of laborious labor, not to mention a late push from Warners, which bumped the movie back onto 350-plus screens for much of October, Superman Returns finally crossed the finish line sometime during the weekend of Oct. 20-22, per BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Still playing on 41 screens last weekend, the movie's hard-fought gross stood at $200,069,408 through Sunday, according to stats at the box-office tracking site. Worldwide, its take was $391.1 million.

Budget-wise, Superman Returns cost, on the low end of projections, $204 million, or, on the high end, $260 million. Neither figure includes however many dollars Warners spent to market and advertise the movie.

According to Variety, a new Superman would have to be a relatively cheaper Superman, with a budget south of $200 million.

Though it seemed to struggle mightily for a movie about an invulnerable space alien, Superman Returns currently stands as the fifth-biggest grossing movie of the year. Its biggest achievement, however, is that it exists at all. Prior to Singer coming on board in 2004 as director and producer, Warners spent more than a decade trying to return the superhero to the big screen.

Superman Returns starred Routh, giving it his best Christopher Reeve go as Superman and Clark Kent, with Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor.
