Strait Wrangles CMA Nominations
The old-school Gentleman Cowboy lassoed a field-best five nominations for the CMAs Tuesday, bringing his career total to 47 in 17 years. That makes Strait the most-nominated performer in CMA history, leapfrogging Merle Haggard's 43 nods.
Strait has won 10 of the trophies--considered country music's highest honor. Twice he was named Entertainer of the Year--and is up again this year. He's also nominated for Best Album, male vocalist, video and single.
Garth Brooks, who beat out Strait for Entertainer of the Year last year, scored four nominations, as did Faith Hill, Patty Loveless and Tim McGraw.
Good thing the CMA doesn't give out a prize for originality. The most staid of country's triple-crown awards (the Academy of Country Music and TNN/Music City News also dish out trophies), the CMA just avoided a dubious three-peat. Four of the five nominees for Entertainer of the Year--Strait, Brooks, Vince Gill and Brooks & Dunn--have been competing against each other in that category for the past three years. Tim McGraw also made the cut this year, bumping perennial fave Alan Jackson, who along with LeAnn Rimes, got snubbed.
The nominees were selected by the CMA, which has a membership of about 6,000 industry types. They will pick winners in another round of balloting. Prizes will be handed out at the Grand Ole Opry on September 23. CBS handles the live telecast, Vince Gill the hosting chores.
The Country Music Hall of Fame will induct Elvis Presley, Tammy Wynette and George Morgan and exec E.W. "Bud" Wendell during the shindig.
