Stop! In the Name of Idol
The 12 American Idol finalists are in for a Supreme experience.
Diana Ross is slated to make her debut on the Fox talent competition this week, coaching the contestants through their performances of her music on Tuesday, and performing herself during Wednesday's results show.
Ross first revealed she would be making a cameo on Idol during an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman in January, saying she planned to serve as "a mentor" to the aspiring singers, before heading out on tour in April.
Fox confirmed last month that Ross was on this season's list of guest stars, along with Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez and Jon Bon Jovi, among others.
As part of a musical history loosely chronicled by Dreamgirls, Ross began her career in Motown in the 1960s as the lead singer of the Supremes, before striking out as a solo artist in 1970. To date, she has racked up 18 number one singles in the United States.
Her most recent album, I Love You, debuted at number 32 in January, marking her first Top 40 album in two decades. The album is expected to get a huge boost following her Idol performance.
Meanwhile, in other Idol news, Paula Abdul has apparently decided to revisit her days as a recording artist by putting out a greatest hits album, titled Greatest Hits: Straight Up!
The album, slated to hit stores on May 8, will include all six of her number one singles and eight top 10 hits.
It's the first release from Abdul since her last greatest hits album, 2000's Paula Abdul: Greatest Hits.
