Stones Not Rolling at Racetrack
It turns out wild horses can and will drag the Rolling Stones away.
The aging rockers have agreed to relocate an upcoming concert in Belgrade from the city's racetrack after local animal activists balked at a plan to sedate the horses stabled there to keep them calm during the performance.
Members of ORCA, the Serbian capital's largest animal rights group, had argued that the noise of the July 14 concert would traumatize the Hippodrome's 300 equine residents, and that tranquilizing the animals or moving them to another location were not acceptable options.
After the group failed to convince organizers to seek out another location for the concert, they contacted the band's management directly, appealing to the Stones' critter-loving instincts.
To the apparent dismay of the organizers, the band took ORCA's concerns to heart and requested that the concert be moved.
"The Rolling Stones band members are great animal lovers," Raka Maric, manager of Music Star Production, told Reuters. "We didn't manage to convince the Stones' management that the concert would not harm the horses."
The Stones will now likely perform at the Usce park at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, a venue that has hosted large-scale events in the past.
Over 80,000 fans are expected to turn out for the concert, which will mark the band's first performance in Serbia.
A 2006 show was canceled after Keith Richards injured his head in a fall, while a 2003 performance was called off after the assassination of then Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.
