Stone Settles Face-Lift Face-Off
Stick an ice pick in Sharon Stone's defamation lawsuit against a plastic surgeon--it's done.
The Basic Instinct star filed suit 11 months ago against Dr. Renato Calabria, alleging that he had told both Us Weekly and In Touch magazines that he had worked on her face.
Stone and Calabria reached a settlement in the matter Monday, according to papers filed by Stone's attorney, Stephen Garcia.
Calabria's attorney, Kevin Leichter, confirmed that Stone agreed to drop the case after Calabria agreed to perform three free surgeries for a charity with which she is involved.
"We're delighted that she agreed to drop the lawsuit," Leichter told Los Angeles' City News Service.
"She agreed to do that after it became plain that the lawsuit was the result of a misunderstanding regarding the nature of certain press articles that implied that Dr. Calabria had performed plastic surgery on her."
Stone's case was dismissed with prejudice, meaning that she can not sue Calabria again on the same claims.
The actress' original complaint arose from an August 2004 Us Weekly story titled "Did Sharon Stone Have Surgery?" in which Calabria offered up a quote that Stone felt hinted she had had some cosmetic work.
In September 2004, Calabria gave a similar interview to In Touch, which further aggravated the actress, though the doctor did not mention her by name. She went on to file suit in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeking general, special, actual and punitive damages and any profits Calabria received from the allegedly "unauthorized use" of her name, image and likeness.
"Stone has never undergone a facelift in order to improve her physical appearance," the actress' lawsuit asserted, adding that the 47-year-old ex-model "prides herself not only on her acting ability and other talents, but also on her natural physical appearance."
Despite the actress' allegations, Calabria denied referencing Stone in his magazine interviews. At the time the suit was filed, his former lawyer, Arthur Barens, claimed the suit was without factual basis.
"Dr. Calabria has never told anyone that he performed plastic surgery on Sharon. He's never taken credit for that or sought publicity for that," Barens told E! Online in December. "If one carefully reads the suit, it only refers to articles discussing rumors that she has plastic surgery, but in none of the articles does Dr. Calabria mention her."
Now that Stone's legal face-off has been settled, the actress can get back to more pressing affairs, such as wrapping up production on the long-awaited Basic Instinct 2.
Stone will reprise her role as steely and sexy novelist Catherine Tramell in the film, which opens March 10, 2006.
