Stone Cops Plea in Pot Bust
Oliver Stone may be fond of telling the stories of courageous rebels who rage against the system in his films, but his personal life is a different story.
The famed director pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor pot possession charge on July 29, according to Los Angeles' City News Service.
Stone was busted at a police checkpoint on Sunset Boulevard May 27 for marijuana possession. The Platoon helmer was taken into custody overnight and released after posting $15,000 bail
His case was to have been heard in court Wednesday, but Stone had his lawyer enter the plea for him in a moved-up hearing last month.
Stone was ordered to pay a $100 fine plus court costs for his bust, per CNS.
While initial reports suggested Stone, 58, may have been intoxicated at the time of his Memorial Day weekend arrest, it appears that the director will not face charges for driving under the influence.
"During the course of the contact, Mr. Stone exhibited symptoms of possible alcohol intoxication," the Beverly Hills Police Department said in a statement following the bust. "As the result of additional investigation, Mr. Stone was arrested for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and possession of a controlled substance."
However, Stone was ultimately never charged with a DUI.
The controversial filmmaker was cooperative with police at the time of his arrest, according to published reports.
Beverly Hills Police and West Hollywood Police have stepped up their efforts this summer to fight drunk drivers and cruising on streets such as Sunset Boulevard, especially on weekends.
While sobriety checkpoints are relatively rare, police presence is high on the Sunset Strip weekend evenings.
This is the second time Stone has been busted by police while driving in and around L.A.
In 1999, Beverly Hills' finest stopped Stone for erratic driving. A subsequent search of his car turned up a virtual drugstore.
According to police, Stone was caught red-handed with diet drug fenfluramine, the anxiety drug Meprobamate, the painkiller hydrocodone and a small amount of marijuana. For good measure, Stone also flunked a Breathalyzer test during the roadside stop.
The maverick movie man pleaded guilty to drug possession and no contest to the DUI charge stemming from the 1999 stop.
As a result of the bust, Stone was sent to a rehab facility.
Stone emerged from the shadows last year after a five-year hiatus with the sword-and-sandals saga Alexander. Plagued by on-set problems and overruns, the production's budget reportedly topped out at $155 million; widely panned, the film only took in around $175 million worldwide.
The Academy Award winner's next project is a film about two law enforcement officers rescued from the collapsed World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001. Nicolas Cage has already signed on to star in the feature.
