"Stone Cold" Sentenced
A legal smackdown today for "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.
The pro grappler wound up on the business end of a sentence after pleading no contest Monday to a charge of hitting his wife.
Austin, until recently one of the biggest stars of World Wrestling Entertainment, was in a San Antonio courtroom to enter his plea to a misdemeanor count of assault with bodily injury. In return, he was slapped with one year of probation, a $1,000 fine, domestic-violence counseling and 80 hours of community service.
If he behaves himself and completes the terms of his probation, the rap will be removed from his rap sheet.
Austin, whose real name is Steve Williams, made his court maneuver a week before he was slated to go to trial on the charge. Although he copped a plea, the charge was not reduced, and Austin took full responsibility for the incident.
"It's kinda been a drag, but it's over," he said afterward. "Don't count on seeing me here again."
The 38-year-old Austin's troubles date back to June 15, when he was accused of roughing up his wife, Debra Williams.
Cops were called to the couple's San Antonio home around 4 a.m., after Williams phoned 911 saying Austin had attacked her, according to the police report. An officer arriving on the scene found Williams, herself a former wrestling personality, crying at the front of the house. The police report indicates she had several injuries, including "a large noticeable welt" below her right eye, as well as bruises to her back, hands and legs.
According to police, Stone Cold "hit her several times after an argument." The report also notes that Williams, 42, "was nervous" about notifying authorities, because she said her "husband is famous."
An arrest warrant was issued, and Austin turned himself in a month later.
The 6-foot-2, 260-pound bald-pated grappler tied the knot with Williams last year in Las Vegas. It was his third marriage. Although Austin filed for divorce in July, the couple has reportedly reconciled.
The domestic disturbance caps a tough year for the performer.
Once one of the top draws on the WWE circuit, Austin began butting heads with Vince McMahon & Co. outside the ring over the direction they were taking his character.
Last March, Austin failed to show up for WWE's pay-per-view Wrestlemania XVIII, and in June, he was AWOL from a scheduled Monday Night Raw telecast. At that point, WWE officials removed him from their active talent roster. His participation in future WWE matches remains doubtful.
